ACID-FREE |

ACRYLIC |
| |
Usually known by its brand names Perspex and Plexiglas this
is a high quality clear plastic used for glazing frames. Useful
for its lighter weight and much higher resistance to breakage.

FILLET |
| |
A piece of wood or card etc. that fits behind the glass in
the rebate to create a gap between glass and mountboard or artwork.
Usually the same width as the rebate. |

FLOAT |

Where the artwork is laid onto the surface of a board without
any part of it concealed. |
|
|
 |
LANDSCAPE FORMAT |
| |
Where the vertical dimensions of the frame are smaller than
the horizontal ones. |

MAT |
| |
Another name for a Window Mount |

MICRON |
| |
One thousandth of a millimetre. Mountboard thickness is now
measured in microns; 1500microns is average (i.e. 1.5mm) |

MOULDING |
| |
The name for the pieces of wood, metal or plastic that make
up the perimeter of the frame whether it is ornate or plain. |

MOUNT |
| |
Can mean either the material around an artwork or the process
of attaching it. See; Window Mount, Drymount, Blockmount, Float |

PASSE PARTOUT |
| |
A tricky little term that means different things to different
people.

3] an old method of framing that involves using a fabric tape
around the edges of the glass and boards to hold them together
instead of a moulding. |

PERSPEX |
| |

pH |
| |
A term to describe the acidity or alkalinity of a substance.

PLASTICISER |
| |
Something incorporated into a material to make it more flexible
or malleable. Some plasticisers can be volatile and their loss
can cause longterm brittleness in the material. Some may harm
artworks. |

PLEXIGLAS |

PORTRAIT FORMAT |
| |
Where the vertical dimensions of the frame are larger than
the horizontal ones. |

REBATE |
| |
The part of the moulding that holds the glass and boards.
It usually overlaps them by about 6 to 10mm. |

REBATE SIZE |
| |
is usually considered as the same as the size of the glass
and boards fitting a frame. It is bigger than Sight Size by
twice the width of the rebate. |
|
|
 |
SIGHT SIZE |
| |
is the measurement of the distance between the two opposite
inner edges of the moulding in a frame. See also rebate size,
external size |

SLIP |
| |
Fits into the rebate like a fillet but protrudes inwards to
add an extra decorative element on the inner edge of the moulding. |

|
 |
STUDIO MOUNT |
| |
A landscape format window in a portrait format board, often
used by photographers. |
|
|
 |
STYRENE |
| |
A cheaper plastic than Acrylic. Used instead of it where budget
is a consideration. The drawbacks are a softer surface more
prone to scratching and greater brittleness that gives a risk
of cracking under impact. Not as colour stable as acrylic. |
|
|
 |
WINDOW MOUNT |
| |
A card border which usually overlays the edge of the artwork.
Serves a decorative function and also a structural one in keeping
the artwork away from the glass. |
