Jargon buster
Since there is no standard terminology set for the framing industry you will find different words used to describe the same thing and different meanings applied to the same term. Here are a few words and phrases that you might find useful.
Jargon buster
ACID-FREE
Once a term used for high quality framing materials, it has become debased and now often needs qualifying to be useful as a framing term. See CONSERVATION and MOUNTBOARD sections.
ACRYLIC
Usually known by its brand names Perspex and Plexiglas this is a high quality clear plastic used for glazing frames. Useful for its lighter weight and much higher resistance to breakage. See also Styrene
FILLET
A piece of wood or card etc. that fits behind the glass in the rebate to create a gap between glass and mountboard or artwork. Usually the same width as the rebate.
FLOAT
Where the artwork is laid onto the surface of a board without any part of it concealed.
LANDSCAPE FORMAT
Where the vertical dimensions of the frame are smaller than the horizontal ones.
MAT
Another name for a Window Mount
MICRON
One thousandth of a millimetre. Mountboard thickness is now measured in microns; 1500microns is average (i.e. 1.5mm)
MOULDING
The name for the pieces of wood, metal or plastic that make up the perimeter of the frame whether it is ornate or plain.
MOUNT
Can mean either the material around an artwork or the process of attaching it. See; Window Mount, Drymount, Blockmount, Float
PASSE PARTOUT
A tricky little term that means different things to different people.
1] another name for a window mount
2] mountboard
3] an old method of framing that involves using a fabric tape around the edges of the glass and boards to hold them together instead of a moulding.
PERSPEX
  See Acrylic
pH
A term to describe the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. See CONSERVATION section
PLASTICISER
Something incorporated into a material to make it more flexible or malleable. Some plasticisers can be volatile and their loss can cause longterm brittleness in the material. Some may harm artworks.
PLEXIGLAS
  See Acrylic
PORTRAIT FORMAT
Where the vertical dimensions of the frame are larger than the horizontal ones.
REBATE
The part of the moulding that holds the glass and boards. It usually overlaps them by about 6 to 10mm.
REBATE SIZE
is usually considered as the same as the size of the glass and boards fitting a frame. It is bigger than Sight Size by twice the width of the rebate.
SIGHT SIZE
is the measurement of the distance between the two opposite inner edges of the moulding in a frame. See also rebate size, external size
SLIP
Fits into the rebate like a fillet but protrudes inwards to add an extra decorative element on the inner edge of the moulding.
STUDIO MOUNT
A landscape format window in a portrait format board, often used by photographers.
STYRENE
A cheaper plastic than Acrylic. Used instead of it where budget is a consideration. The drawbacks are a softer surface more prone to scratching and greater brittleness that gives a risk of cracking under impact. Not as colour stable as acrylic.
WINDOW MOUNT
A card border which usually overlays the edge of the artwork. Serves a decorative function and also a structural one in keeping the artwork away from the glass.
