Many things can cause damage to artworks and Conservation Framing
refers primarily to the selection and use of suitable materials
and methods that will ensure that as little harm as possible
will come to a picture once framed, either from the outside
environment or the frame itself.
Sometimes a picture will need treatment or repair before
it is put into a frame to ensure it is best protected and
this is described as conservation. This is a job for trained
conservators who specialise in different areas such as paper
conservation, photographic conservation etc. We have good
contacts with many conservators and can use our experience
to advise when a work might need conservation.
Different materials will be affected by different factors
but listed here are some of the most common causes of damage
to artworks
• Light; visible and ultraviolet
• Heat;
• Humidity;
• Pollution; ozone, sulphur compounds
• Acidic Materials;
• Biological attack; insects, moulds
• Human Intervention; physical damage |
