Primers
The function of a primer is to give a suitable ground on which to paint. When using a traditional oil primer (or an alkyd primer) you must first size the canvas with rabbitskin glue to protect the canvas from the damaging effects of the oil. When using an acrylic primer however it is inadvisable to use rabbitskin glue as it prevents good adhesion between the primer and canvas. For more information about primers see Paintworks Information Sheet No. 1
Primers
ACRYLIC PRIMERS
Acrylic primers
Probably the simplest option. No sizing required. They are suitable for oils or acrylics and are ready to paint on within a day. High opacity, intense white primer for canvas, board etc which dries quickly to a near ,matt finish.

ACRYLIC GESSO PRIMERS
Acrylic gesso primers
An acrylic gesso primer has a slightly larger particle size which is considered to give a better surface for oil paint to adhere to than the ordinary acrylic primer. Unlike traditional gesso, these can be used on canvas.
For an economy, good quality universal acrylic based primer we would recommend Talens Gesso which is available in sizes up to 10 litres.
We also stock Spectrum, Liquitex and Golden gesso primers. For a more unusual effect you could try Golden’s black gesso.

OIL BASED PRIMERS
Oil based primers
These are the traditional primers for oil painting and are unsuitable as a base for acrylic painting. You must first size your canvas with rabbitskin glue. We stock Spectrum White Lead Primer which needs at least 4 weeks drying time or for a quicker option we have Spectrum Thixotropic Alkyd Primer and Roberson Oil Primer.

PRIMING MATERIALS
Priming materials
In addition to ready made primers we keep a range of materials to make your own or to modify a primer. Rabbitskin glue and whiting are used in preparing gesso and marble dust and pumicif powder can be used to give more tooth. We include Liquitex Modelling Paste in this section as it is used to give a relief surface to your support.
