Watercolour papers
The most important characteristic of a watercolour paper is its heavy “size”. This is the property which enables it to be saturated with water and to keep the colour sitting on the surface. The surface texture is dependent upon how the sheet was dried. A smooth surface is produced by drying between hot presses thus the term HP, if the press is cold the surface has a medium texture – we call this NOT. For a more rugged texture the sheet is dried between blankets and this is called ROUGH.

RWS
RWS
This relatively new paper is the result of co-operation between the paper mill and the Royal Watercolour Society. It is part rag and part linen which makes it very strong, very heavily sized which makes the paint sit on the surface but also allows you to wash it off easily and a bright white which helps keep colour vibrant. We stock it in imperial size (560x760mm 22”x30”) in 300g and 425g. It is available in HP, NOT and Rough.

SAUNDERS WATERFORD
Saunders waterford
Also made at St Cuthbert’s Mill in Somerset, Waterford is a high quality rag watercolour paper. It is the lovely warm white which one associates with rag paper. It is acidfree, surface sized with gelatine, has 4 deckles and is available in HP NOT and Rough.
We stock imperial sheets in 190g, 300g, 425g and (NOT and Rough only) 640g, and rolls in 300g NOT.

AQUARELLE ARCHES
Arches
This French paper is extremely popular the world over. It is 100% cotton, tub sized with gelatine (which accounts for its reputed pungent smell when wet), air dried, and with a choice of 3 surfaces. It has 4 deckles and we stock it in 185g, 300g, 640g and a superb 850g.

BOCKINGFORD
Bockingford
This very popular paper is an economical alternative to the traditional rag watercolour papers. Made from purified wood pulp it is internally sized to give it good paint holding properties and comes with a medium textured surface. It is acidfree, has 4 cut edges and we stock it in 190g, 300g and 535g. We also keep the 300g weight on rolls.

FABRIANO 5
Fabriano 5
From the Fabriano mill in Italy this paper is 50% rag and 50% woodpulp, It is acidfree and available in a nice silky HP surface or a grainy NOT surface. We chose this paper because it comes bigger than the usual imperial size, it is 700x1000mm (approx 27”x40”) and is a reasonable price for a nice quality paper. We stock 210g which is good for drawing and light washes and 350g. .

GIANT HOXTON
Giant hoxton
A watercolour paper 5’x4’ – you’d better believe it! It is 400g, so heavy enough for its size but light enough not to be extortionately priced. It is mould made, acidfree and well sized. Its main feature however is that it is HUGE.

TWO RIVERS HAND MADE PAPER
Two rivers
This lovely paper is hand made at the Two Rivers Mill in Somerset. We stock white in small sheets 406x508mm (16x20”) in 410g and 630g. It is a very heavily sized paper made from linen and with 4 natural deckles.
