Oil varnishes
It is best to leave oil paint for a year before applying a final varnish. This sounds extreme as the paint may be touch dry after a few days but the chemical process which takes place to properly dry the paint will take 6months to a year depending on the thickness of the paint. If you apply a final varnish too early there is the danger that you will damage the paint film and impair the drying process.

RETOUCHING VARNISH
Retouching varnish
Once touch dry your paint may “sink” ie dull matt patches appear. To freshen up the picture and to give temporary protection you may use Retouching Varnish. This is a dilute varnish which, if used sparingly in thin layers, does not affect the long term drying process.
Talens Retouching varnish – is non-yellowing and dries in a few hours. The spray format is useful for keeping layers thin. Roberson retouching varnish is available in 60ml and 250ml bottles.

PICTURE VARNISH
Picture varnish
Once your picture is properly dry a final varnish can be used to give a uniform degree of gloss and protection to the paint layer. We recommend a modern non-yellowing varnish.
Rembrandt Picture Varnish is available in gloss and matt which, according to Talens, can be mixed together to adjust the degree of sheen. It is available in liquid or sprays.
Roberson Picture Varnish is available in 60ml and 250ml bottles.

(Matt varnishes are created by the addition waxy matting agents. Using too thick a layer directly on to your paint can cause a milky effect in areas which are more porous. To avoid this I suggest applying a thin layer of gloss varnish beforehand in order to give a uniform absorbency).

DAMAR VARNISH
Dammar varnish
Damar is a traditional varnish giving a protective top layer. It has a tendency to yellow and crack with age. We stock Damar Varnish from Talens, Roberson and Spectrum in liquid form and Damar Crystals with which you can make your own .
