Squirrel is less springy than
sable but has admirable water holding properties which
make it the top choice for a wash brush. Other soft hairs
are also used for wash brushes and hakes which are soft
flat brushes often chosen by artists applying large areas
of wash.

VINCI “FRENCH” GOOSE QUILL SQUIRREL
Series 418 is an irresistible wash brush. Silky soft pure
Russian squirrel hair bound in a goose quill and set on a
light coloured handle.
This holds plenty of watercolour for applying large areas
of wash and the point helps you to control the edges. If ever
the possession of a wonderful brush could make you paint a
better painting this is the one.

ARTE SERIES 50 SQUIRREL WASH BRUSH
This is one of my favourite brushes and if I could take only
one brush on a watercolouring trip this is the one. Dry, it
is the softest and most sensual of brushes, wet it and it
holds plenty of water but keeps a painting tip. It is excellent
for large washes but good for the tricky corners too.
It has a short black handle, a nickelled brass ferrule and
it is a pointed flat sort of shape. Go for extra large if
you can afford it.

Series 333. This magnificent brush is made from finest Kazan
squirrel with excellent spring and belly and holds generous
proportions of colour. It also points well. It is bound in
a nickel ferrule and is available in one size only.

Series 51 is made from a mixture of less expensive animal
hairs which, nevertheless, perform well as a wash brush. It
is available in large and extra large and is a generously
proportioned brush.

Series 28 is an inexpensive wash brush with reasonable colour
holding qualities.
HAKES
We stock two main types of hake. The Ron Ranson hake made
to that artist’s specification by ProArte has a metal
ferrule and is a very fine brush in sizes from small to extra
large. Our cheaper imported hakes have sewn wooden handles
in the traditional way.
Apologies. To anybody reading this and
thinking that it is really over the top. However, I challenge
you to come and have a good look at our wash brushes and not
get just a bit excited.
