Some of our most thumbed and favourite books. Probably not gripping bedtime reading but packed with useful information.
read any good books lately?
“The Artists’s Handbook of Materials and Techniques”
Ralph Mayer - Faber and Faber - ISBN 0-571-14331-8
What can we say… encyclopaedic, every home should have one!
“The Artists’s Handbook”
Ray Smith - Dorling Kindersley - ISBN 0-7513-6439-8
If you find Mayer a bit dense, this is very readable and well illustrated and covers some less common areas.
“Conservation Concerns ~ A Guide for Collectors and Curators”
Ed. Konstanze Bachmann - Smithsonian Institution Press - ISBN 1-56098-174-1
Advice on how to look after all sorts of artefacts not just works on paper. Easy to dip into.
“The Painter’s Handbook”
Mark Gottsegen - Watson Guptill - ISBN 0-8230-3003-2
This has an excellent section on acrylic paints and dispels the myth that they are the wonder paint that can do no wrong.
“The Art of the Picture Frame”
Jacob Simon - National Portrait Gallery - ISBN 1-85514-172-8
A fascinating history of portrait frames up to the 20th century
“Handmade Prints – creative printmaking without a press”
Anne Desmet and Jim Anderson - A&C Black - ISBN 0-7136-4638-1
This is great, and not just because it has got some of Roy’s prints in it. Full of interesting ideas, covers all the different methods and makes you want to have a go yourself. Go on, try some.

“The Digital Print"– Martin C. Jurgens
Thames & Hudson- ISBN 978-0-500-51498-6
  Roy wrote a review of this for Printmaking Today and this is the final paragraph;
'I wouldn't just recommend this book to anyone making digital prints I would insist that they read through the sections relevant to their work to arm themselves with the best knowledge currently available. This is a landmark in books on printmaking - and without ever telling you how to make a print.'
