Some of our most frequently asked questions are answered on pages within the site others we will try to add here as they crop up..
WHAT CAN I USE TO STICK PAPER TO CANVAS?

First the caution. In the long term the differences in flexibility of canvas and paper may cause the paper to split or blister away from the canvas. Next a question. Why do you want to do it? Is it as a means of displaying a work you have already created or do you want to create a suitable working surface? If it is the former, bear in mind the risks of something going wrong in the process ~ how will you retrieve the picture, is it worth the risk?
We would recommend a mixture of starch paste and PVA. The PVA will give a strong bond while the starch paste will slow down the drying time allowing you to get the paper adhered firmly before the PVA dries too much. Make sure your canvas has an even tension before you start and weight the paper covered with blotting paper while it dries. For the best advice try talking to a paper conservator before you start.

IS IT OK TO USE HAIRSPRAY TO FIX MY DRAWINGS?
We wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re not worried about how long your work will survive without deteriorating. Hairspray is designed to be a short term product not a permanent protection. There are risks of it discoloring, embrittling the paper and reacting with the materials of the artwork. Artists fixatives use high quality resins designed to remain stable and as clear as possible for many, many years.
HOW CAN I STOP MY COLLAGES FADING?
Assuming you are using ephemera such as tickets, magazine cuttings or other commercial material then it is unlikely you will be able to stop it completely, but framing using a glass or acrylic which stops ultraviolet light reaching the image will slow it down. Less easily achieved, avoid fluctuating temperature and humidity and exposure to strong light or heat. Also make sure you are using good stable adhesives without nasty chemicals that might trigger degradation.
