These have no binding power so should not be used excessively
when thinning paint or the adhesion of the paint to its support
may be lost. We stock traditional natural solvents like turpentine,
white spirit in cleaning or artists grade, odourless solvents
and now Zest It a new environmentally friendly turpentine substitute
smelling of citrus fruit which I have been finding very satisfactory
when painting at home. |

For extending and modifying paint in middle or top layers of
paint you should not use thinners because of the “fat
over lean” principle (read any good oil painting book
if this is new to you). Instead choose from a wide range of
oils or mediums each with their own characteristics or buy the
ingredients to make your own recipes.
We aim to keep all the traditional mediums, a good range of
modern mediums to speed up drying times as well as mediums specific
to the oil paints we stock eg Talens Glazing Medium and Old
Holland Drying Medium. Try Venice turpentine if you want a deep
warm gloss which dries slowly. |
